Regret is a Feeling

Sep 26, 2022

As we wrap up our Monthly Self Trust Challenge on Regret, we look back at everything we learned that ties into this final very important point.....

Regret is a feeling.

And, I know, you are like duh!  Of course it is!

But I find this important to highlight because the next truth is

Our thoughts create our feelings.

And this matters because the final truth is

We don't have to believe everything we think.

Sometimes this hits home right away.

Sometimes it takes awhile to let it sink in.

Either way, I want you to consider it as an opportunity.

A gift even.

Regret is caused by the thoughts you think about whatever it is that you think is causing your regret.

How we know this to be true is that two people can have the same result and one can feel regret and another will not.

And the difference is not in whether that person is a good person or not.

It is in how they choose to think about the result.

One may think "I shouldn't have done that, I'm so stupid." And that thought makes them feel regret.

Another may think "I shouldn't have done that, I'll know better next time." And that thought makes them feel compassion.

Regret is a feeling that is caused by your thoughts.  And you can choose whether you feel regret or not by paying attention to the thoughts you are choosing.

  1. Own your choice to choose regret, or not.
  2. Question the thoughts that are creating regret.
  3. Be curious and compassionate about why you may or may not want to choose them.  Are you the same person? Did you make the best decision you could at the time?
  4. Deliberately and consciously choose thoughts that serve you now.  Thoughts that build you up and into the choices you want to make moving forward instead of thoughts that tear you down.

Regret is a choice you make.  And you don't have to.

I hope you make that choice more intentionally now.
